Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

How many times have you wondered what others thought of you? How often do you look in the mirror in the morning and evening and try to create yourself so that you might be acceptable to those who are in your daily life–friends, family, co-workers, bosses, etc. How many times have you thought of similar things like in the picture below?woman-low-self-esteem-550x386

In today’s world, we are inundated with these thoughts from everywhere-media being the biggest. Some companies are fighting back in their advertisements, realizing what kind of damage they and companies like them have wrought upon the younger population of America.

But the reality is that the statement of “You’re beautiful as you are right now” has really become a myth in society. In all honesty, the truth from society is this:

“You’re not good enough.”

This is such a harmful thing to say to people, especially those in high school and even more importantly, young women. I’ve seen the damage that this kind of state and the images that accompany it do to people and it is deplorable.

I can’t pretend to understand what people go through or the pain they feel when they struggle through to make themselves perfect in society’s eyes. But I do have a response both to society and the people who are affected by these kind of statements and thoughts:

“You are fearfully and wonderfully made!”

This is a statement taken from Psalm 139:14. God is a very personable God. Every bit of you, from what your personality is like to what your physical appearance looks like, is something God has made a part of you. It has taken me years to realize this myself and integrate into my life. Anything else that tries to change you from who you are is a lie from Satan. When you hear those whispers in your head that you’re:

  1. Not pretty enough
  2. Not skinny enough
  3. Not muscular enough
  4. Not smart enough

All these are meant to distract you from one thing: Taking your eyes off of Christ, who loves you more than anything, so much so that He died on the cross to bridge the gap that SIN had created between God and His image-bearers. You are created in the image of God, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else in God’s creation has that. That alone should tell you how special you are in everything in and on the Earth.

Here, let’s boil it even more down for you… Take the universe and everything in it. Got it in your mind? This infinite universe that God created, the galaxies, the stars, the planets, and everything on those planets, and the thing that God prizes more than anything to have in it is YOU.

God says one thing about people who wish to follow Him, and it is found in Romans 12:2:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Don’t follow what the world wants you to do, but rather, follow what God wants you to do. The world knows jack squat about life, and what it advises usually leads down paths that have never ended well for anyone. But God says this in Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

God has a purpose and will for your life, and your job is to pray to Him that He might show it to you and by your own testimony bring others into the saving knowledge and the peace that only Christ can bring. Culture and society says it has all the answers, God’s response to society is the same as it was in Job: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?”

Essentially, you are, as the Matthew West song says, a Child of the One True King.
